About that Goldfish

100619_142302_0.pngIn the last post, Is as fortunate that have found and linked the video regarding putting the school system on trial.

The video makes a point.

At the same time,it is unwise and unjust to make the accusation that the school system in America is deliberately trying to treat students unfairly.  Every teacher I have every known wants to do the very best for his her students - no one goes into teacher with mal intent.

The problem is not the participants in the system, but perhaps the system itself.  Our school system has two very different roots.  On the one hand, we seek to prepare students for adult life in a democracy.  They must be readers, thinkers, and problem solvers in order to address the social issues of the day.

On the other hand, we seek to educate students for a job or career.  And so much of our history is tied to the Industrial Revolution hat we think it important to prepare students to work in Industry.  And we think that by homogenizing the learning experience that we homogenize the product, making that product suitable and good for employment.

These two assumptions have operated in the background of school philosophy for a good time.  Both are valid, valued, and flawed.

Inherently, we do not look at student strength and then attempt to grow that strength.  Inherently we seek to remediate the weaknesses and inadvertently we forget the strengths.

Instead, we need to see each student and unique and individual - each with his/her own learning paradigm and learning strengths.  We need to work to enhance those strengths first, and then work to remediate the weaknesses.  

And education is just not set up that way at the current time.  

The bottom line is that some of us are goldfish and some of us are eagles and some of us are horses.  Each of us is different.

And every student deserves a chance to demonstrate and show those strengths.  

The New Classroom recognizes and enhances student strengths.
